Happy New Year all! Let’s start it with a big ALOOOOOOOHA!!! Aloha, as you know, means hello, goodbye, and love in Hawaiian. What you may not know is that it is also a way of life, or Aloha Spirit. My mom has told me I have this in spades since I was little. Aloha spirit is all about welcoming and loving people from all walks of life into your own. Its about caring and sharing your heart openly and freely. This is probably the biggest reason I started a blog, to share my world and joy with everyone. Maybe inspire a few people along the way too. I am so excited to begin 2015 by knowing I lived Aloha in 2014, which made it an awesome year, and will do the same for as long as I live! Try it! Yell as loud as you can right now: ALOOOOOOOHA! Did someone say it back? Did someone look at you funny? Make sure you look them dead in the eye and give the biggest grin you can 🙂 Now you’re getting it!
So I had this idea… I wanted to use the wok, I wanted steak, I wanted to make a stir fry. Simple enough… but I wanted to make it my way. What is my way? Well I love sweet and sour anything so I knew I wanted to do a spin on that. Not to mention I’m really close to having a sweet and sour sauce that is to die for! A few more tweaks and we’re there! So using the immeasurable genius of my father’s teriyaki steak and my mother’s way with island style herbs and saucyness, I give you Aloha Stir Fry!
- 1 lb tri tip steak thinly sliced
- Chow mein noodles
- ½ yellow onion sliced
- 2 cups Aloha soy sauce (if you can’t find it, reduced sodium soy sauce will work too)
- ¼ tsp fresh ginger shredded
- 4 garlic cloves minced – divided
- 1 tbsp oyster sauce
- ½ cup brown sugar
- ¼ cup apple cider vinegar
- 1 cup pineapple juice
- 2 tbsp hoisin sauce
- 1/2 tbsp seasame oil
- Veggies of your choosing: Bean sprouts, carrot, broccoli, snow peas, snap peas, etc.
Prep time: 1 hour
Cook time: 10-15 minutes
Marinade steak in shoyu, oyster sauce, ginger, ½ the garlic, and brown sugar for 1 hour.
Prepare chow mein noodles according to package directions.
In a large measuring glass or bowl whisk apple cider vinegar, pineapple juice, hoisin, sesame oil, and cornstarch.
Chop and prep your veggies. I like to have everything ready to go before I start using the wok.
Heat wok and cook steak with 1/2 cup of marinade for about 2-3 minutes on each side.
While steak is cooking, add 1 cup of the marinade to the apple cider mix you just made and whisk.
Remove steak from Wok
Add onion, the other 1/2 of the garlic and any other firm veggies that need to be cooked for a bit in the wok to soak up the liquid (about 3 minutes).
Add noodles, the rest of the veggies, and steak to the wok and stir.
Add the marinade/apple cider vinegar mix to the wok at about 1/2 a cup every couple of minutes and toss. The liquid will soak up so taste test before adding each 1/2 cup. Once it’s to your liking, stop! You may not need to use all the liquid.
Cook until it’s food 🙂 About 5-8 minutes.
